Saint Sebastian wore them in his flesh. Uccello`s warrior held them in his hand. Altdorfer had them crossed in blue white.


A modern vehicle driver would not suffer pain from this image of martyrdom and it would not cause him to step on the brakes. He would 'banish' any such picture, for arrows of this kind are not known in the traffic jungle.

Just imagine: Like on climate maps, the whole street full of small, pointed, black arrows with barbs in an array of curved phrase marks, whereby drivers could make the dictated beat perceivable to one another ----- the feedback loops would get tangled, causing accidents each time around.  


Every so often the question drills into my brain: Who invented the  w h i t e  arrows and when?
